Super Mario Maker

When Super Mario Maker was announced I was really excited. I've long awaited a game where I could make and share my own Mario levels, and this promised to do just that.

Super Mario Maker is a game where you can make your own Mario levels and upload them to allow the world to play on them. Of course, this also means you can play on levels that other Mario fans across the world have created, which can at times be incredibly frustrating. Some people seem to make some really complicated levels and some people have made levels where all you need to do is start the level and Mario will be pushed or carried around the course.

The making of the levels is very easy.

As you use both the Wii U Game Pad Screen and the Screen on which you play, you might be surprised to find that you can customise the hand that appears on Screen. It can either be a very feminine looking hand (various skin tones are available), a cat paw (three different fur colours) a Cartoon hand and our Hero Mario's gloved hand is also an option.

You can pick left or right handed, which is clever but the picking of a hand isn't really that important to game play, it is just something fun to change every so often!

The first thing to do is to pick which of the different backgrounds from classic Mario games that you want to use. There is the original Mario 8-bit, Super Mario 3 (improved 8-bit), Super Mario World (16-bit) and the current New Super Mario Bros. U.

After picking your style, using your Wii U Game pad and stylus you can drag and drop various items to create your level. All of your favourites, Fire Flowers, Question Mark Blocks, Mushrooms can be found and of course many more.

There are a few short cuts, for example if placing a Boo on to your level and you shake the Boo (using the stylus) you can create a Ring of Boo's to terrorise Mario on his way across your level.

Of course, the game isn't all about making your own levels.

There is also the 100 Mario Challenge, which is the Game Play aspect of the game.

Within this mode, you have 100 lives and you can pick between difficulties of Easy, Normal or Expert and then you have to complete the levels that the game picks for you.

Easy has eight random levels picked for you each time from the various levels that have been uploaded from across the world, and as you can imagine they are normally quite easy. Even my Mum who is rubbish at Mario games is able to complete these levels with not too many of her lives lost.

Normal has sixteen random levels picked for you, again these are levels from all over the world and depending on which levels have been picked this can get quite tricky/crazy in places! However, so far I've not been beaten and have finished the levels the game has picked for me.

There is also the 10 Mario Challenge, where when you are playing offline (the mode is available online too) you complete levels that the team at Nintendo have created for your enjoyment.

Amiibos are just for show in this game.

Don't get me wrong, there are a couple of Amiibos that do something cool, but generally the only change when tapping the Amiibos is that you can change the costume that Mario wears.

However with the Anniversary 8-Bit Mario Amiibo that you could purchase with the game it did a little more than change the costume Mario was wearing.

The Amiibo releases a Giant Mushroom that when Mario touches not only changes the look of the game, so it looks like you are playing on an old fashioned TV, but it also gives him a power up and allows him to storm through various levels.

Of course, the Amiibo isn't needed to complete levels, but it does make some of them more fun!

Yes, you should get this game.

I do think that this game is worth the money and playing the various levels others have made is great fun and has given me a lot of inspiration for other levels of my own.

There are a few glitches that I have found, although I'm not sure if they are really glitches or intentional design issues, such as being able to disable a clown cart with block placement.

The point is however that the game is fun for new fans and old of Mario and I give it Nine out of Ten Stars!
